The Music Department supports many bands, orchestras and ensembles. Joseph Lewis, Jr., Director of Bands, directs the Symphonic Band, the Eagle Marching Band and the Ashland Area Community Concert Band. Scott Garlock, Professor of Music, directs the Jazz Orchestra.

Scholarships

In addition to generous scholarships for qualified students majoring in music, the Music Department encourages membership in these ensembles by offering scholarships for non-majors whose contribution is vital to each ensemble’s success.

The Symphonic Band

The Symphonic Band is Ashland University’s premier instrumental organization, made up of 50 students, both music majors and non-majors. Stressing a high level of artistry and musicianship, the ensemble performs a variety of literature. The ensemble presents three concerts and performs for campus events. No audition is required.

The Jazz Orchestra

Ashland University’s Jazz Orchestra is one of the finest in Ohio. Made up of both majors and non-majors, the Orchestra performs for concerts and campus events throughout the year. In addition, the Jazz Orchestra hosts the annual Maplerock Jazz Festival, inviting outstanding high school jazz ensembles to perform and work with the finest professional jazz musicians in the country. This ensemble tours annually and an audition is required. Small jazz combos are also formed as schedules allow.

Ashland Area Community Concert Band

This ensemble is designed for both university students and members of the Ashland community The ensemble rehearses one evening each week and performs a wide variety of literature from Broadway selections and classic marches to masterworks transcribed or written for concert band. No audition is required.

Eagle Marching Band

Ashland University’s Eagle Marching Band consists of 65 students, plus a color guard and featured twirlers. The group performs for all home games and travels to marching exhibitions throughout Ohio. One of the most active organizations on campus, the band has come to represent the best in musical presentation and exciting movement within a contemporary style.
