AU Lab to Marketplace series features presentation by energy start up entrepreneur

10/06/2020 ASHLAND, Ohio -- pH Matter Inc. founder and President Dr. Paul Matter will speak at Ashland University on the development of materials for energy storage applications.

This talk is the fourth annual presentation of the Lab to Marketplace seminars sponsored by the Science Scholars Program in the College of Arts and Sciences and the Morgan Center for Entrepreneurial Studies in the Dauch College of Business and Economics. The Lab to Marketplace seminars brings speakers to AU who are engaged in translational research and research that uses scientific knowledge to develop new technologies and other applications.

Matter’s company specializes in the development and commercialization of materials for energy storage applications and has specific expertise in carbon-based nanomaterials for fuel cells and lithium ion battery electrodes.  Since its founding in 2011, it has developed and delivered products and technologies for customers including NASA, the U.S. military, the Department of Energy, and both U.S-based and international customers.

Matter received a doctorate in chemical engineering from The Ohio State University and previously worked as design group leader and chemical systems engineer at NexTech Materials.  His work has included more than 20 peer-reviewed journal articles, a book chapter, five issued patents, more than 10 patents pending, and numerous conference presentations.

The Lab to Marketplace seminar series is supported by the National Science Foundation through Ashland University’s NSF S-STEM grant, “Science Scholars Program: Opening the Science Career Pipeline Through Enhanced Engagement and Support.” The five-year grant provides scholarships and academic support for academically talented science students with financial need. The program is designed to provide renewable scholarships ranging from $4,000 to $10,000 annually to students with unmet financial need who declare a major in the natural sciences and plan to pursue a career in science. The program also provides students with peer and faculty mentoring and additional programming through a dedicated career coach and the Center for Academic Support to help them succeed in their education at AU.
