12/03/2020 ASHLAND, Ohio -- Five Ashland University Business Capstone students scored in the top 2 percent in a field of approximately 3,000 teams from 150 colleges/universities participating in the worldwide GLO-BUS simulation.

GLO-BUS is a completely online exercise where teams of students run companies that are in a neck-and-neck race for global market leadership in two product categories -- wearable video cameras and sophisticated camera-equipped copter drones. The companies compete in a global market arena, selling to buyers in four geographic regions—Europe-Africa, North America, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America.

Sam Coon, Brittany Close, Isaiah Crock, Brittany Bucci and Olivia Gasper – all seniors in the AU Dauch College of Business and Economics -- managed complex decisions about product design, marketing, compensation, facilities, social responsibility, and finance -- allocating cash to each in ways that would increase revenue and reduce costs.  These students ultimately surpassed simulated investor expectations for earnings per share, return on equity, stock price, credit rating and image rating.

"These students impressed me with their data analysis skills, creative problem-solving, and well-orchestrated teamwork,” said Rebecca Schmeller, assistant professor of management. “ They got to see the big picture of running a business that has to satisfy multiple stakeholders -- customers, communities, employees, shareholders.  It required discipline, quantitative reasoning, and a huge heart -- as they pulled together their entire business education to make decisions that would satisfy all stakeholders.  I'm very proud of them for competing so successfully."

"I was really excited about how well my teammates and I were able to work together and build off of each other’s ideas to score high in the simulation," said Coon. Added Bucci, “This experience has provided me with great decision-making experiences that will be beyond useful as I prepare to enter the workforce. It has also showed me how many different decisions are made in a business on a daily basis, how these decisions can affect so many people, and showed me what kind of business owner and manager I want to be."
