Kids can explore other cultures, while never leaving Ashland

05/25/2021 ASHLAND, Ohio – The Ashland University ACCESS program will offer local experiences in other cultures for children and teens this summer.

All international day camps offered in Ashland will be held at 930 Claremont Avenue from 9 a.m.- noon. Drop off will be at 8:50 a.m., and pick up will be at noon. The cost for each camp is $150. Each camp will offer an immersive cultural experience.

Children and teens can get a taste of Brazil with instructor Carla Abreu-Ellis through Camp Brazil Teens (for ages 12-18) June 14-18 and through Camp Brazil Kids (for ages 7-11) June 21-25. Each group will learn the basics of Portuguese as well as information about Brazilian celebrations, customs, food, music, history, and culture. “Underground Brazil” will expose young people to the sights and sounds of the country.

Young people can also explore China, Liberia, and Mali this summer. Camp Africa: Liberia and Mali will be offered to ages 7-11 from July 5-9. Taught by Lindora Howard-Diawara, a native of Liberia, topics will include dress, foods, languages, celebrations, and friendships. “Underground Africa” will showcase people, fashion, and animals from Liberia and Mali.

Camp China will be offered in Ashland for children 7-11 from June 28 - until July 2. Instructor Yang Ruo Lin will introduce multiple Chinese activities: chatting with friends in Chinese, creating a dancing dragon head, learning the secret of spring festival dumplings, experiencing Chinese opera, and telling the legend of Chang E and Hou Y.  In addition, young people will see, smell, and hear Beijing in an “Underground China” experience.
