Jackie Owens, Ph.D., RN, CNE

I am truly excited that you are thinking about pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing! I was once where you are, and I can tell you that this program changed my life. After practicing nursing for almost 20 years, I considered myself a pretty fine nurse; and like you, I was. Although I enjoyed learning, my work and two young children took up all my time. I wondered how going back to school would benefit me, and whether it would be worth the sacrifices my family might have to make.

If you are here, something has sparked your interest. Perhaps you always intended to earn a BSN, you want to pursue graduate education and advanced practice nursing or your employer is encouraging you because healthcare is such a complex environment these days. Whatever the reason, thank you for checking out Ashland University’s RN to BSN program.

The BSN degree prepares you to practice the art and science of professional nursing, while providing a strong foundation for graduate education. We also offer several opportunities to take select coursework for undergraduate credit that can transition to AU graduate programs such as the Master of Business Administration degree, the Doctor of Nursing Practice, the School Nurse Licensure Program and the Nurse Educator Program. The online format is ideal for adult students with family and work commitments. I hope that we will have the privilege of supporting you on your journey from returning to school through earning your degree.

So, was the sacrifice worth it? One thousand times, “Yes!” When I graduated from this program, I was thrilled to add dozens of new accomplishments after all my years of practice in critical care and occupational health. And much to my surprise, I progressed to graduate school so that I could teach nursing, which I had dreamed of doing since the age of 19. The best outcome, however, was something I could never have imagined when I started: My two young daughters had blossomed into young women pursuing graduate degrees! I didn’t even realize that, while they were “sacrificing” as I earned my degree, I was role modeling advanced education for them.

I often say that a lucky few will move nursing forward at the global level, and some may enjoy that opportunity in a national arena. But every nurse has the chance to make a positive impact on the profession in their own backyard. Will you?

If you are searching for information about earning a BSN, you are already making that positive impact. I sincerely hope you will enroll in AU’s program to learn even more ways to make a difference in the lives of patients, families, communities and even the world!

I am happy to help in any way I can as you make your decision, apply, enroll and once you are here! I look forward to working with you in class. As you consider Ashland University, know that we will support you in your unique goals and as you grow in your career as a nurse. I have shared my story. Now, I am eager to hear yours.
