Take a Peek Inside

One of the main things veterans miss once they leave the military is the camaraderie with fellow military members. We identified this gap on our campus for military-connected students and decided to create a great place, exclusively for you.

The most popular parts of The Jack are, of course, the recreation and communal spaces where military-connected students are able to come together, share their experiences and connect other students who hold the same values, share the same experiences and approach life and the world around them in similar ways. It’s a place to gather with other veterans and military students and work through this transitional time of your lives together.

Designed with direct input from veterans, military-connected students and their families, The Jack includes:

  • Conference spaces
  • Offices for Military Student Services and support staff
  • A USO-style veterans’ lounge and bar where veteran students and staff can share a sense of camaraderie in a comfortable space
  • Games, activities and TVs
  • Fully-stocked kitchen, including snacks
  • Beautiful outdoor patio area with a propane grill and cornhole
  • Study areas
  • Living communities are also being created to meet the specific needs of current student veterans living on campus

How This Started

In alignment with Ashland University's commitment to its “Accent on the Individual” philosophy and The Ashland Promise, the university established the Jack W. Liebert Military & Veteran Resource Center (“The Jack”) on campus. The Jack's mission is to provide individualized resources for veterans enrolled at Ashland University.

Sparked by her passion for veterans in the Ashland University community, Debbie Liebert Karl (’72) contributed $1,000,000 to establish the Military & Veteran Resource Center. Her personal plea to the Governor of Ohio and his team secured an equal match to her gift. Inspired by her Navy veteran father and the fact that Ashland showed continual dedication to her personal success during her undergraduate years, her dream was to give back to both the university and its veteran students in a way that could make a real difference in their individual lives.

Dedicated in 2020, The Jack provides you with everything you need as a military-connected or veteran student on campus. The Jack works as a one-stop-shop, and gives you access to everything you need to transition successfully into college life and equip yourself for a successful future.

Along with the day-to-day benefits we offer military-connected and veteran students through our continuing commitment to our “Accent on the Individual” philosophy, we also create opportunities throughout the year for you to connect with other military-connected students and their families.

Veterans receive a red, white and blue cord at graduation to mark both their military service and academic achievement. A pinning ceremony is held for dependents.

As a member of the national organization, we offer veterans the opportunity to seek leadership positions at both local and national levels of Student Veterans of America. This group chapter meets regularly for both recreational and service-oriented purposes. Membership offers the opportunity to take part in national competitions. Students who serve as representatives on the Student Senate or in leadership roles within the organization can significantly enhance their resumés.

Our military-connected and veteran students love to give back to the community, and we create opportunities year round for local service. At Christmas, we hold a toy drive benefitting deployed families, which touches the lives of over 100 families. You also have the opportunity to take part in food drives and service events for elderly veterans in the community.

This inaugural cohort of 12 schools participates in fundraising for veterans. Membership allows you to make career and professional connections you’ll carry forward into the future.

Ashland University was named among the top 12 schools in the nation for military-connected and veteran students. We are the only private university on the list.
