Environmental science is truly interdisciplinary. Projects typically depend on collaboration among scientists and other professionals with different areas of expertise, and require knowledge of biology, chemistry and geology. Environmental science majors at AU train in science fundamentals and national and global context, preparing students to take on new environmental problems. The Gulf oil spill; climate change; water resources management; emerging pests and invasive species; and the changing energy economy are a few examples of environmental issues where science is needed.
Student Spotlight: Cassie Nix
Senior Cassie Nix is a Toxicology, Environmental Science and Biology triple major with a Chemistry minor. Yes, she is super enthused about science! She also is very active in campus life. In addition to being an excellent student in the classroom and lab, Cassie has been active as the Ashland University Recycling Intern, a paid position that includes coordinating the campus recycling program, writing a monthly newsletter and active participation and leadership on the campus “Go Green” committee. AU’s Environmental Science Program Attracts Students Who Excel!
Congratulations to Courney Kourie (Biology'17)! She has been awarded a $2,500 Ohio Environmental Science and Engineering Scholarship for the 2016-2017 academic year from the Ohio EPA and Ohio Academy of Science. Courtney had to demonstrate "strong skills and interest in the environment" and explain her research experience. Since 2010, 16 AU seniors have competed successfully for this award, all with majors and minors representing each student's preferred mix of Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry, Geology, and Toxicology.
